Currently, my sink basin is sticky with glitter deposits, my floors are more sparkle than carpet, and my vacuum cleaner hose is clogged and broken from slurping glitter out of the couch cushions.. Few synonyms exist for glitter, so you'll be hearing that word a lot throughout this post.
The glitter frenzy began when I popped into Hobby Lobby (the only store more dangerous than Target, probably) and noticed that Mod Podge has a product that MAKES things sparkle. Glitter built right into the glue. My obsession has only been perpetuated with the arrival of Christmas time.
This garland requires a bottle of this Magic Mod Podge, styrofoam balls, a spongey paintbrush, patience, and string for your garland. For the white balls, you can either do one coat of Mod Podge for instant sparkle-tastic decor. OR, for my other glitter fiends out there, do a coat, cover it in glitter, than allow it to dry. ALLOW IT TO DRY. Or you will make a big fat mess and be sad when you have to do them all over. Experience is speaking over here.
Finish it off (when dry) with a second coat to act as a sealant. I opted for gold and white glitter. Once they were finished, I hot glued them onto some string. Surprisingly, the hot glue didn't melt right through the styrofoam.
I strung them up on our windows with some greenery, a string of lights, and a bit of white deco mesh. I was introduced to deco mesh last year and wish I'd had it a thousand Christmases ago. You get a lot of fancy bang for very little buck.
Carefully wind up and store your garlands up if you want to keep them for future holidays/events. Nobody wants to sit down and untangle teeny tiny strings. I happily discovered this old scalloped garland from a friend's baby shower while unpacking and put it to good use:
I followed Lex's glitter letter tutorial over here for the joy letters.

This is so cute! A great glitter synonym, "speckles of beautiful debris you will never fully erase." Just a thought :)
ReplyDeleteHA. Can I borrow that for my next glitter post? (Because, naturally, there will be more of them).

Thanks, Kerry! Something about decking the halls with homemade crafts definitely makes it feel more like Christmas.
DeleteSo sparkly and I love how easy this is. I wonder if the Christmas lights would melt the Styrofoam. They remind me of disco balls.
ReplyDeleteI waited to reply to this comment out of fear that my lights were suddenly going to melt my Styrofoam--so far so good!
